Evelyn Politzer
1961 — 2026"A life woven in wool, community, and slow, raw craftsmanship—fostering conversations of nature, motherhood, and shared space."
Uruguayan Roots & Heritage
Evelyn Politzer was a visionary visual artist and weaver who dedicated her life to conveying nature's plea for interconnectedness. Born in Montevideo, Uruguay, she carried with her a deep cultural affinity for hand-dyed fibers and traditional textile methods—knitting, weaving, and embroidery.
For Evelyn, wool was far more than a physical medium. It was a thread of connection to her heritage, carrying the stories of generations of Uruguayan women who turned raw fleece into warmth, comfort, and survival. She took this rustic, grounding material and reshaped it into monumental public installations, tactile yarn paintings, and organic sculptures that challenged human-imposed boundaries.
"My practice has roots in Uruguay, a country where sheep outnumber human inhabitants, and where wool and other natural fibers continue to be an essential tool for people's livelihood. It evokes the comfort of belonging, no matter where I am in the world."
The Miami Era & Sculptural Expansion
After relocating to Miami, Evelyn expanded her craft from traditional structures into contemporary and academic dimensions. In 2021, she completed her **MFA in Visual Arts** from Miami International University of Art and Design, which catalyzed a massive scale shift in her work. She began experimenting with large-scale architectural dimensions—weaving woolen installations around tree trunks, dangling fiber pods, and using reclaimed window panes as frames for woven tapestries.
Her sculptural brilliance was recognized in 2020 when she won **The Ellies Creator Award** from Oolite Arts, one of Miami's most prestigious honors. This enabled the development of groundbreaking installations that brought botanical and oceanic textures directly into public spaces, such as botanical gardens and international airport galleries, prompting millions of viewers to reflect on climate fragility.
Co-Founding FAMA & Community Weaving
Beyond her private studio practice, Evelyn was a pillar of the South Florida arts community. Believing that textile-making is an inherently social act—one that loops individuals together in common conversation and shared space—she co-founded the **Fiber Artists Miami Association (FAMA)** in 2020.
Through her leadership in FAMA, Evelyn brought together hundreds of textile makers, organized groundbreaking community exhibits, coordinated city-wide events like the Miami Textile Biennial, and established a persistent dialogue with contemporary museums. Her legacy will continue to loop and weave through the artists, students, and collaborators she inspired.
